Frequently Asked Questions

Starting couples therapy can feel like a big step.  Below are answers to some of the questions I am most often asked.

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy provides a structured space where both partners can explore what is happening in their relationship with the support of a trained therapist. Together, we look at the patterns and cycles that leave you feeling stuck, disconnected or unable to resolve issues.

What approaches do you use?

My approach draws from Emotionally Focused Therapy, Systemic and Psychodynamic Theory, the Gottman Method, Relational Life Therapy and Imago Relationship Therapy. My work is integrative, meaning I tailor the work to your relationship.

Do both partners need to attend? / What if my partner does not want to come to therapy?

Ideally, couples therapy involves both partners because the relationship itself is the focus of the work. However, if one partner is unsure about attending, it can still be helpful to begin with a consultation with one of you to discuss your situation and consider the best next step.

Do you work with couples who are considering separation?

Yes. Couples therapy is not only for couples who want to improve their relationship; it can also provide a space to understand what has happened and consider the way forward. Therapy is not about persuading you to stay together. For some couples, the goal is to gain clarity about the future and make thoughtful decisions together.

How many sessions will we need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your situation, your goals and the challenges you are facing. Some couples come for a shorter period (6-12 sessions) to work through a specific issue, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore deeper patterns in their relationship.

Do you offer online or in-person sessions?

I currently offer couples therapy sessions online via Zoom. I have found that online therapy can be particularly helpful when partners have busy schedules or are in different locations.

What happens during the free 45-minute consultation?

I will ask questions about your relationship, what you have been experiencing and what you would like support with. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions about my approach and how therapy works. At the end, we can discuss whether couples therapy with me feels appropriate and what the next steps might look like.

Do you work with couples where one partner is experiencing depression, anxiety or other mental health difficulties?

Yes. Mental health challenges can have a significant impact on a relationship, affecting communication, intimacy and how partners support each other. We can explore how these experiences are affecting the relationship and what changes may help both partners feel more connected.

Do we need to attend therapy every week?

Most couples begin with weekly sessions, as this provides consistency and helps build momentum. As therapy progresses, we might decide to move to fortnightly sessions. Most couples also find it helpful to have a regular weekly appointment, as it creates consistency and makes it easier to prioritise therapy. However, if your schedules vary, we can discuss flexible booking options where availability allows.
